Verifiable credentials are becoming a reality. The groundwork is laid: issuer, holder, verifier, one trust triangle, standardized at W3C, the OpenWallet Foundation, Trust over IP, DIF, and ISO. And implementations are arriving in every sector: eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI wallet, mobile driving licenses, agent payments, legal-entity identifiers, travel, supply chains, content authenticity.
Each of these ecosystems potentially brings value to the entire digital economy. But only if they can interconnect.
Four challenges
Interconnecting trust ecosystems raises four questions that no single wallet, and no single government, can answer alone:
- Create. How do we create new ecosystems at will, and monetize them: publish schemas and accreditation lists, define business models, and make each ecosystem publicly discoverable, interconnectable, and joinable?
- Cross-border. How do we recognize and onboard ecosystems from any country, and any sector?
- Mutual authentication. How do services and AI agents from different countries identify each other, and trust each other?
- Discovery. How do we search the graph of trusted services?
One answer: a public trust layer

Setting up your own sovereign ecosystem trust registry is straightforward: create your trust registry, publish your Ecosystem Governance Framework, your credential schemas and business models, and onboard your participants. Your ecosystem exists, and is discoverable.
Then deploy your services and AI agents. Choose your business wallet. Join ecosystems, on Verana or on other trust lists, and attach their credentials to your services: you are now visible in the Trust Graph. From there, any person, service, or AI agent can find you, mutually authenticate with verifiable credentials, and connect. Trust, established before the first message.
Built in the open
Behind Verana: open specifications on open standards, open-source software (Apache 2.0), and a non-profit foundation managed by its community. Anyone can use it all for free, and extend their own products and services with it. And anyone can contribute: join the Foundation, join a working group, or create your own.
In essence, Verana enables trust to scale. Not just within one ecosystem: across the entire digital economy.
